Contribution to Science & Education: I was born in 1955 and Schooled at Holy Cross College , Gampaha, Sri Lanka. Graduated from the University of Colombo in 1979.
Completed doctoral studies in Medical Microbiology in 1986 and became a Professor in Microbiology 2001 and Chair Professor in 2009. I am currently holding the position of Dean in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. I have completed a PG Diploma in Medical education and Women¡¯s studies from universities of Dundee and Colombo respectively. I have also completed a MBA from University of Wales.
I have contributed to Microbiology related sciences through conduct of research and in the process contributed to human resource development. Pioneered the use of Molecular Biology for the diagnosis of infectious diseases in general and specifically tuberculosis in Sri Lanka. Contributed to the literature on rapid diagnosis of tuberculosis and drug resistance of M tuberculosis using molecular methods. The drug susceptibility of non tuberculous mycobacteria was another aspect that was studied extensively as it has become a clinical problem. Drug resistance of other bacterial pathogens including, S aureus, S pyogenes, S pneumoniae, Salmonella and Enterobacteria spp were studied both at phenotypic and molecular level as these have created challenging issues in the clinical management of patients. I have supervised over 20 MD dissertations and MPhils and supervised 4 PhD Students as their principal supervisor and won NSF research awards and Presidential awards for more than 10 years and contributed as a resource person in many research forums. Have won numerous awards for best oral and poster presentations in scientific sessions locally and overseas. I have other research interests including women¡¯s health and women¡¯s career development on which I have researched and published. Medical education is another area of interest and conducted research on

improving educational achievement of students with several publications in key journals in medical education. I have been a teacher for the past 40 years. My current h index is 23, i10 index is 40 and have 3298 citations.
I am happily married to an academic, a surgeon and have three children in the ages 38,36 and 28 yrs. I am due to retire by the end of this year from my academic position and looking forward to continuing my professional career."
