Professional Summary Description: CAROLYN BURNS is a Professor in Zoology. Her expertise is in biological processes and population dynamics in lakes, plankton ecology and productivity, water quality, particularly in relation to nutrient enrichment, and the conservation of freshwater ecosystems. After gaining degrees from the University of Canterbury and University of Toronto, followed by post-doctoral experience at Yale University, USA, she joined the staff of the University of Otago, New Zealand. She was Head of Department, 1998-2005. rnCarolyn contributes in various capacities on boards, committees and panels of international and national science, freshwater and environmental organisations, including the editorial boards of five international scientific journals. She has been active in the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society, serving terms as President and Secretary-Treasurer, and was President of the International Limnological Association, 1995-2001. She has been an executive member of science and conservation organisations at national and international levels, including Regional Councillor for Australasia and Oceania for IUCN (World Conservation Union), and Academy President of the Royal Society of New Zealand. She has chaired assessment panels for the Marsden Fund Council and PBRF (Performance Based Research Fund) and was Moderator for the PBRF assessment round in 2007. She has been a Director of the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) Ltd (2000-2006) and has served on, and chaired, committees to review university departments at Otago, Auckland and Canterbury, and research institutions in New Zealand, Australia, Sweden and the Netherlands. She was a member of the Academic Audit panel of Victoria University of Wellington (2009), and chaired the Academic Audit of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, in 2010. She is currently chairs the Department of Conservationâ??s national Recovery Group for rare and endangered Grand and Otago Skinks, Otago University's Environmental Sustainability Advisory Group; she is Chair of the Governance Board for Genetics at the University of Otago that oversees teaching programmes and research, and Deputy Chair of the Governance Board of the Allan Wilson Centre for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, a Centre of Research Excellence (CORE).
