Professional Summary Description: Jan Cameron has been Director of NZUAAU since March 2010. She was previously Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic) (1998-2010), Dean of Arts (1996-98) and Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Canterbury. rnrnJan's first degree was is in Zoology. For a number of years she taught biology and science at secondary school. Later degrees in sociology specialised in demography and research methodology; more recent research and postgraduate supervision focussed on family sociology, gender issues and sociology of sport. She taught research methods and has carried out research evaluations of social service agencies. rnrnAdministrative responsibilities at the University of Canterbury included being Dean of Arts (1996-98) and University Proctor (1992-95). Her role as Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at Canterbury 1998-2010 spanned the spectrum of student and academic support services, including oversight of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit and the University Centre for Teaching and Learning for over ten years. Other management roles at different times included responsibility for the Library, Student Administration, Student [support] Services, Liaison [recruitment], Sports Science and Recreation, and Health Services. She had regular interaction with studentsâ?? association representatives, led interactions with secondary schools and participated in emergency planning and institutional risk management. Jan had oversight of programme reviews and managed the quality assurance and audit self-review processes at Canterbury over two academic audit cycles. She served as University representative on the Council of the former Christchurch College of [teacher] Education. Jan's experience in the university thus spans the spectrum of student, academic staff member, senior management and governance.rnrnAt national level Jan served for twelve years on the Committee for University Academic Programmes of the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee (NZVCC) which approves all university programmes in New Zealand and oversees admission criteria. She has also been CUAP's representative on several NZQA-sponsored working parties related to qualifications frameworks, school curriculum and University Entrance and was a member of a Tertiary Education Commission-sponsored working party on performance indicators.rnrnIn addition to training as an NZUAAU auditor Jan has participated in the AUQA auditor training and attended INQAAHE workshops on auditor training and self-review. Jan is a Board member of APQN and convenes the Mutual Recognition Working Party. In her role as Director she manages all New Zealand university academic audits. She recently served on the panel auditing the Oman Tourism College (2011).
