Professional Summary Description: Dr. Latha Pillai is an academic and educational administrator, with more than two decades experience of working in the field of higher education, both through the system of formal education and open and distance learning. Her areas of professional interest include quality assessment and evaluation, promotion of women in governance and academic leadership, She is presently working as Adviser, with the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore. Dr. Pillai has previously served as Pro Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU); and Education Officer and Deputy Secretary, with the University Grants Commission. She has been responsible for the contextualization of Association of Commonwealth Universities, set of Training Manuals for Women in Higher Education and its implementation.
As Pro Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Dr Pillai was in-charge of a number of Schools and Centres which the Chair for Sustainable Development, School of Tourism, School of Social Work, School of Agriculture, School of Extension and Development Studies, Institute for Competency Advancement for Teachers (i-CAT) amongst others. She has supported the Government of Indiaâ??s Preservation of Environment policies for a Green campus and been closely involved with the programmes for Sustainability Science. Her support to Appreciation programmes for sustainable development as well as Leadership programmes on sustainable management have ensured that these issues are brought to the forefront and the threat of climate change on sustainable development and role of ecosystems in lives of people remain in focus.

Through such efforts, IGNOU has been able to reach the unreached in hitherto unknown sectors and sections of society. She has actively contributed to the development of joint projects on telecentres with the Telecentre Foundation.
In continuation of her efforts to ensure that the open university truly reaches out to all groups who are unable to routinely gain access to a traditional education, Dr. Pillai has also spearheaded the initiation of the first ever collaboration of an open university with the Army, Navy, and Air Force, for provision of higher education facilities for the jawans, sailors and airmen of the Indian armed forces. The provision of this valuable facility to the enlisted personnel of the defence services allows them a means to upgrade their skills, even as they serve the Nation in far flung and inhospitable areas.
With her strong communication and advocacy skills, Dr. Latha Pillai has successfully promoted causes that have impacted higher education and has helped in improving quality of this sector. Dr. Pillai has travelled abroad extensively on the professional front and participated in seminars, workshops, led delegations and is also the recipient of Indo-US Visitorâ??s Fellowship, International Resident Fellowship - University of Calgary and Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Research by the Australian Government.
