Please write a professional profile of 500 words.
Professional Summary Description: I am a quality professional and have over 20 years’ experience of reviewing higher education institutions and programmes. I have also been a lead consultant on a number of recent QAA international projects.
Until December 2014 I was Director of Quality Assurance at QAA, with overall responsibility for the management and delivery of review activity in England Wales and Northern Ireland. This included universities and other higher education providers, the review of higher education in further education colleges and the review of private higher education colleges. I was also responsible for the oversight of QAA’s review of transnational education.
As Director I managed a group of 60 staff and ensured the successful delivery of all contracted programmes of quality reviews. I was also responsible for the design, development and implementation of a number of new methods and processes.
At the end of November I accepted a flexible retirement package from QAA which included a contract for a new part-time position as Associate Director International. I am currently working three days a week for the Agency. My new role involves the coordination of key international projects and leading on the identification and implementation of QAA’s international strategy. The part-time appointment allows me time to take on additional commitments.
I joined QAA in October 2002 from Liverpool John Moores University, where I was Director for Partnerships and Widening Participation. Previously, I held the post of Assistant Provost with responsibility for Learning and Teaching. I taught Human Geography for many years at the City of Liverpool College of Higher Education and at Liverpool Polytechnic.
Before joining QAA, I worked for both the Higher Education Quality Council and QAA as an institutional auditor and programme review coordinator. In this capacity I had extensive experience of reviewing UK higher education offered in other countries. I was also involved as an expert in the review of the University of Copenhagen (2004) and the Australian Universities Quality Agency (2005).
In addition to my work at QAA I have also been closely involved in the work of ENQA both as a reviewer for European Agency Reviews and as Chair of a working group exploring the concept of excellence in higher education. I am fully conversant with the Bologna process for the harmonization of HE systems in the European Higher Education Area and the European Standards and Guidelines.
I have also been involved in projects about quality assurance developments in Hong Kong, Macao, Sri Lanka, Mautritius, Malta and Albania. In addition, I have been working with British Council in Brazil and Ukraine, providing advice on higher education policy and the development of quality assurance systems.
