Professional Summary Description: Professor Pamela Abbot has worked in the higher education sector in the UK and Rwanda for over 30 years and has also been employed as a secondary school teacher and further education college lecturer. She is a Sociologist by training and was elected an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2002. She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has excellent interpersonal and communication skills. She can communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences orally and in writing, including governments and other stakeholders, external higher education agencies, colleagues and staff, students and parents, the general public and the media. She has extensive experience as a senior manager in higher education and as a researcher in communicating with this wide range of audiences
She has worked at all levels in higher education from lecturer to Vice Principal (Deputy Vice Chancellor) as well as being the Foundation Executive Director for the National Council for Higher Education in Rwanda. She is currently working as an honorary professor at the University of Aberdeen, UK. Amongst other activities she is advising on the setting up of a consultancy company and on developing a research ethics policy.
During her career she has had experience of all aspects of quality assurance and enhancement and the maintenance of standards from examining through programme validation, subject review, institutional audit, institutional accreditation and setting up a quality assurance agency. She was involved in the development and implementation of the Scottish Qualification Framework. She has expertise in the evaluation of research degree programmes and research as well as of taught programmes. Her experience comes from being a practitioner, a manger and an auditor.
