Joe Maddon has a suggestion on how to improve MLB's replay review system: Hire some nerds.
The Cubs manager offered up that solution during Brent Seabrook Jersey a postgame soliloquy Wednesday night, shortly after review officials upheld the final out of the game in a 5-2 Chicago lo s to the Dodgers.
MORE:
Maddon disagreed with the ruling, which let stand Martin Havlat Jersey the on-field call that Scott Van Slyke had thrown out the Cubs' Chris Denorfia at second base as he tried to stretch a ninth-inning hit into a double. And he suggested afterward that perhaps MLB should hire specialists to review the video in New York rather than relying on umpire crews that rotate into that duty between stints on the field.
"I think it screams for Adam Boqvist Jersey an independent group back there to research the video," Maddon said, . "That's what I think it screams for as opposed to working umpires that are actually on the field. I think you should get a bunch of nerds back there that know how to look at a videotape and then come to a conclusion. I think it would be much more interesting that way."
Here's the video of the play. Maddon believes some angles show Denorfia getting his left hand to the bag before Enrique Hernandez applies the tag to the runner's Alexandre Fortin Jersey chest. The replays were sufficiently inconclusive that officials in New York upheld the call, but didn't confirm it. Either way, Denorfia was Steve Larmer Jersey out and the game was over.

"To say there was nothing definitive right there I cannot disagree with more strongly," Maddon said. "I have no idea why they would say that. It makes zero sense to me whatsoever.
"If the play was confirmed, I could almost live with that. Dominik Kahun Jersey To say it stands it's just not a cool way to go, game on the line. And it was obvious from that one shot he was absolutely safe. No questions asked."
Maddon's opinion on the call is clear. But we'll probably never know whether the "nerds" would have sided with him or not.
